Research completed by my group on shoulder injuries and recently presented.

Overall return to play 87%
• However only 65% returned to previous level of play.
• Subgroup analysis exclusively for overhead athletes were found to have a RTP rate of 81% with 66% returning to their prior level of play.
Further subgroup analysis: focusing on baseball pitchers showed a lower RTP rate of 71%
• Position players (fielders)had a higher RTP of 83%
• Sub-analyses by surgical technique showed SLAP repairs with RTP of 88% and Biceps tenodesis had RTP of 74%
Presented at Clinical Orthopedic Society and to be presented at upcoming Eastern Orthopaedic Association

My passion is to restore athletes to their sports safely and efficiently. Continuing to research, learn, and grow as a surgeon is the path to this goal.
Labral tears in overhead present a difficult challenge to return pitchers, swimmers, volleyball, tennis and other athletes back to sport. Results seem promising but not a 100% return to play. Pitchers seem the most at risk. Hopefully, this information will help others choose treatment options and educate their patients about the injury, recovery and expectations.
