Louis Rizio, MD, FAAOS

Louis Rizio, MD, specializes in sports medicine and orthopaedic surgery. He treats a variety of sports-related injuries, performs arthroscopic surgery, minimally invasive knee surgery, minimally invasive shoulder surgery and cartilage restoration procedures. He has been engaged in research in the use of stem cells and PRP biologic treatments and recently has published articles on stem cell research. His practice focuses on athletes ranging from professional to the weekend warrior, including pediatric sports injuries.

After completing his residency in orthopaedic surgery at Tufts University Medical Center he specialized in sports medicine. After completing his fellowship in sports medicine at UHZ – Miami Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Institute he became the Chief of Sports Medicine for the Department of Orthopaedics at Rutgers Medical School from 2000-2005.

Dr. Rizio has practiced privately in New York and New Jersey. He has been an assistant professor in the Department of Orthopedics at New York University – Hospital for Joint Diseases in New York City.

Currently, he is Head Team Physician for the New Jersey Institute of Technology Division 1 NCAA athletic program and Kean University Athletics. He has worked with numerous high schools in the area. He is Former Team Physician for New Jersey Pride Professional Lacrosse and was Assistant Team Physician for the Miami Dolphins, Florida Marlins and the University of Miami Hurricanes. He was formerly a clinical instructor for the University of Miami Department of Orthopedics.

Dr. Rizio’s research interests are primarily devoted to cartilage regeneration with adult stem cells, shoulder related disorders, injuries in throwing athletes, Tommy John surgery and knee related conditions. He is the coauthor of articles, abstracts, and book chapters on these and related topics in orthopedics. His articles and abstracts are published in prestigious, peer-reviewed scientific journals, including the American Journal of Sorts Medicine, Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, Journal of Knee Surgery, Techniques in Knee Surgery, Orthopaedics and Tissue Engineering.

A sought-after speaker, Dr. Rizio has delivered local, regional, and national invited presentations in his field. He is a member of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and New Jersey Orthopaedic Society. During residency, Dr. Rizio earned the Tufts University Medical Center Dean’s Citation for Excellent Student Education. He has been featured in New Jersey Monthly “Top Doctor” listings and the Consumer’s Research Council of America Guide to Top Orthopedists. Dr. Rizio is a recipient of the Vitals.Com Patients’ Choice Award multiple years.
