Louis Rizio, MD is a top Orthopaedic Surgeon in Essex County, NJ. He is an expert in adult and pediatric sports medicine and regenerative biologic treatments. Fellowship trained in sports medicine and former Chief of Sports Medicine at Rutgers Medical School. I specialize in the treatment of sports related injuries and have extensive experience performing arthroscopic surgery, minimally invasive knee surgery, minimally invasive shoulder surgery, and cartilage restoration procedures. My practice focuses on athletes ranging from professionals to the weekend warrior, including pediatric sports injuries. Additionally, I see a variety of orthopedic conditions involving fractures, strains, and sprains. I also handle motor vehicle and work-related injuries. This includes the non-surgical treatment of the spine.
I completed my residency in orthopaedic surgery at Tufts University Medical Center. I then trained for an additional year in sports medicine. This was at UHZ – Miami Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Institute (University of Miami). I was then named Chief of Sports Medicine for the Department of Orthopaedics at Rutgers Medical School from 2000-2005.
I have practiced privately in New York and New Jersey. I held the position of an Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopedics at New York University – Hospital for Joint Diseases in New York City. Formerly, a clinical instructor for the University of Miami Department of Orthopedics.
Currently, I care for the athletes at the New Jersey Institute of Technology Division 1 NCAA athletic program. I have been the Head Team Physician there for over 20 years. I have worked with numerous high schools in the area and continue to do so.
Previous positions include: Former Team Physician for New Jersey Pride Professional Lacrosse. Assistant Team Physician for the Miami Dolphins, Florida Marlins, and the University of Miami Hurricanes.
Research interests focus on cartilage regeneration and repair with adult stem cells. They also include shoulder-related disorders, injuries in throwing athletes, Tommy John surgery, ACL tears, and elbow disorders in athletes. I use PRP and other biologic treatments in my practice to enhance healing and recovery.
I have published articles, abstracts, and book chapters on related topics in orthopedics. Articles and abstracts are published in prestigious, peer-reviewed scientific journals. These include the American Journal of Sorts Medicine. They also include the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, Journal of Knee Surgery, and Techniques in Knee Surgery. Additionally, there are Orthopaedics and Tissue Engineering (Research Publications and Presentations).
Speaking engagements include local, regional, and national conferences. This individual is currently a member of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine. They are also a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the New Jersey Orthopaedic Society.
